Sub-Regional taskforce
submits memorandum to PM
Newkerala, September 09, 2009
In an
attempt to enhance the Indo-Bangladesh trade in Northeastern states,
Sub-Regional Independent Taskforce on Connectivity and Cooperation,
constituted recently with both business and civil society groups has
submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh yesterday.
The
memorandum included the recommendations of the taskforce with regard
to facilitation of land, maritime and riverine connectivity for
Indian goods through Bangladesh to reduce transportation costs for
India and yield significant revenues for Bangladesh.
It has
also suggested inviting representatives from Nepal and Bhutan to
taskforce for formulating an integrated approach for the enhancement
of trade in the sub-region, taskforce officials said, adding that
India was a source of connectivity to Bangladeshi merchandise headed
for Nepal and Bhutan, which would play vital role in Indo-Bangla
trading relations.
The task
force emerged out of a stakeholder consultation organised by CUTS
International, a Jaipur based civil society group engaged in
research and advocacy on issues relating to international trade,
regulation and governance in Agartala on August 9.
''The
formation of this sub-regional taskforce is an important landmark in
the evolution of Indo-Bangla trading relations as it represents a
concerted effort to bring together representatives of civil society
and chambers of commerce in both countries in influencing the future
trajectory of trading relationships,'' said Siddhartha Mitra,
Convener of the Indian segment of the newly minted taskforce. –UNI
